Hue served as Vietnam's imperial capital from 1802 to 1945 and the Perfume River was at the centre of everything. The city's UNESCO World Heritage sites line its banks: pagodas, citadels, palaces, and the elaborate tombs the Nguyen emperors built for themselves while they were still alive.
This day covers the essential circuit: the Perfume River by boat to Thien Mu Pagoda, the Imperial Citadel and Kien Trung Palace at its heart, then the afternoon at the royal tombs of Khai Dinh and Tu Duc with stops at the craftspeople who have supplied Hue's temples with incense and conical hats for generations.

The Perfume River boat section runs in the morning; weather rarely affects it but strong winds can occasionally alter the route. Kien Trung Palace opening hours are subject to restoration works — your guide will confirm access on the day. Modest dress is required at all religious and royal sites: shoulders and knees covered.
