The best food in Hoi An is not in the restaurants facing the river or on menus designed for tourists. It is in the narrow alleys, at the corner stalls, on the plastic stools where locals sit shoulder to shoulder eating dishes that have barely changed in a hundred years.
We have been running this street food tour for years, and it remains one of the most requested experiences we offer in Hoi An. Our guides grew up eating this food. They know which Banh Mi stall has the best pate, which Cao Lau uses the traditional wood ash water that makes the noodles authentic, and which alley the locals actually eat at versus the ones that just look the part. Over four hours and six stops, you will eat more than you expect, learn more than you planned, and almost certainly end up with a list of places to come back to on your own.
All food at every stop is included. One drink included. Small groups keep it from becoming a convoy — your guide has time to explain every dish and answer every question.

A stall tucked into a residential lane where Banh Xeo are cooked to order on a flat iron pan. You wrap the pieces yourself in mustard leaf with fresh herbs, the way locals do.

Stop 5 and 6: sweet finish and a drink, then return
A bowl of Che (Vietnamese sweet dessert soup) and your included drink at a café your guide uses as a neighbourhood regular. The tour ends here — your guide can point you toward anything else worth eating before you leave Hoi An.

The noodles are made using water from a specific ancient Cham well in the old town and wood ash from a particular island — the combination affects the noodle texture in a way that cannot be replicated elsewhere. Restaurants outside Hoi An that serve Cao Lau use a different water source and the result is noticeably different.
Translucent shrimp dumplings folded into a rose shape, steamed and served with crispy fried shallots on top. They are made by a single family in Hoi An who supply most of the restaurants in the old town under an informal exclusivity arrangement. The name comes from their resemblance to a white rose when folded.
More than most guests expect. Six stops over four hours, each with a full portion or a generous tasting — not small bites. Most guests finish the tour too full for dinner, or skip their main course and go straight to dessert.
Morning (08:00) and evening (17:30). The morning tour covers markets at their busiest and stalls that sell out early. The evening tour catches the old town as it lights up and the night market stalls opening.
Yes, with advance notice. Several of the key Hoi An dishes have vegetarian versions — Cao Lau with tofu, Banh Xeo without shrimp and pork. Let us know at booking and the guide will plan the route accordingly.
Around 3 to 4 kilometres over the four hours, all flat, through the old town lanes and the streets immediately behind it. Comfortable shoes are sufficient — no hiking required.
Maximum 12 guests per departure. Small enough that the guide can take you into stalls a larger group can't enter, and explain every dish without shouting over the group.
Yes. The food stops are at ground-level stalls and the pace is unhurried. Children tend to enjoy Banh Mi and White Rose dumplings especially. Let us know ages at booking.
